A high ceiling with chandelier, draped windows with a panoramic view, a glass door leading to a brick patio—all centered around a turned leg wooden table. The room has all the trappings of an elegant dining room except that, steps away, dinner is simmering on the stove.

This kitchen was made bigger simply by pulling it out into the back yard like, if you will, a giant bread drawer. The resulting flat roof provided the perfect excuse for adding a terrace off of a second floor bedroom. Existing double hung wood windows were painstakingly removed and relocated to the extension where their distinctive trim was replicated exactly.

No one would know this is new construction.

With storage requirements met by the existing butler’s pantry, little cabinetry was built in the kitchen proper. Blue-green painted cabinetry next to the range was custom-built to match the butler’s pantry, including copper edging on countertops covered in white laminate for a more durable version of original painted wood countertops. A deceptive mahogany island hides appliances like dishwasher-, refrigerator- and freezer-drawers.

Here, home cooking meets high style in this pithy kitchen.
